parking permits

Cardiff is a compact city making it very easy to get around – everything can be accessed on foot, by bike or using public transport. All our houses are within close walking distance of the city centre and the majority of academic buildings. If you are bringing a car, then parking in residential streets in the main student areas (Cathays and Roath) is usually operated under the council permit scheme (though there are pockets of non-permit parking). Permits are not expensive and are easy to get hold of. Just make sure to plan ahead if you want to park from the first day in your new home. For students in our Adamsdown student house (ideal for the ATRiuM and Newport Road) there is free, non-permit parking right outside your front door, and it’s always easy to get a space.

Cardiff

Resident Parking Permits are available from Cardiff Council at the following cost:

2nd per year

  • £40.50 – 9 months
  • £27- 6 months
  • £13.50 – 3 months
Visitor Permit You can buy up to 5,100 visitor parking hours per year. 1 batch of 850 hours will cost £9. You then just register your visitor’s vehicle when they need to park.

How to Apply

All applications are now online at Cardiff Council Website>> using their MIPermit online system.

To create aMiPermit account you will need

  • your full name
  • your house number and postcode
  • your council tax number (you can get this from us, your landlord as proof that you live at the property).

To apply for a resident permit you need:

  • Your vehicle registration number.
  • Proof that the vehicle is bring kept at your address and linked to the permit holder.

A proof of vehicle can be:
a Vehicle Log Book (V5C), Hire or lease agreement or Insurance Document. The insurance address should be where you keep the car. If you are a student and you are taking your car with you to uni, your car should be insured at your student house address.Your home address for the motor insurance must be where you will be spending most of your time, but you can have a separate correspondence address if you don’t want your mail going to your temporary address. Changing your address can make your premium more expensive but if you don’t tell your insurer that you’ve moved across the country you risk invalidating any future claims.

For more information see the Cardiff Council Website>> or call 029 2087 2087.

Newport

In Newport permits cost £34.00 per year per vehicle and must be applied for online. Visitor Permits are available in books of 10 at £13. See more information on how to get one on the Newport Council website>> or call 01633 656 656.
